The Post-9/11 GI Bill is for individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The Post-9/11 GI Bill will become effective on August 1, 2009, for training that begins on or after that date. The maximum basic benefit is earned after serving an aggregate of 36 months of active duty service or after 30 days of continuous service for those individuals who were discharged for a service connected disability.
If you are an officer who graduated from a service academy or received ROTC scholarships, you may also qualify for the new GI Bill benefits.
Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (MGIB), Chapter 30
The Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty, called "MGIB" for short, provides up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible veterans. You may be an eligible veteran if you have an Honorable Discharge and you entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985, had military pay reduced by $100 a month for first 12 months, continuously served for at least 3 years, OR 2 years if that is what you first enlisted for, OR 2 years if you entered the Selected Reserve within a year of leaving active duty and served 4 years ("2 by 4" Program). Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following release from active duty. Detailed Information
Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR), Chapter 1606
The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Eligibility for this program is determined by the Selected Reserve components. VA makes the payments for this program. You may be entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits.
If your eligibility to this program began on or after October 1, 1992, your period of eligibility ends 14 years from your beginning date of eligibility, or on the day you leave the Selected Reserve. If your eligibility to this program began prior to October 1, 1992, your period of eligibility ends 10 years from your beginning date of eligibility, or on the day you leave the Selected Reserve. Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP), Chapter 1607
The Reserve Education Assistance Program is an education program that provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected Reserves, Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), and National Guard, who are called or ordered to active service in response to a war or national emergency, as declared by the President or Congress. Eligibility will be determined by the Department of Defense (DoD) or Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as appropriate. Generally, a member of a Reserve component who serves on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 under title 10, U.S. Code, for at least 90 consecutive days under a contingency operation, is eligible for REAP. National Guard members are eligible if their active service extends for 90 consecutive days or more and their service is: authorized under section 502(f), title 32, U.S. Code, authorized by the President or Secretary of Defense for a national emergency, and supported by federal funds. There are no specific time frames to use REAP; however, your eligibility generally ends when you leave the Selected Reserves. Detailed Information
Survivors/Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA), Chapter 35
The Dependents’ Educational Assistance program provides education benefits for the spouse and dependent children of a veteran or service member who:
- Is determined to be permanently and totally disabled from service connected causes, or
- Is on active duty and is likely to be discharged with a permanent and total disability, or
- Died in service, or
- Died of service connected causes, or
- Is currently missing in action or captured in the line of duty.
The program provides up to 45 months of education or training. Detailed Information
Vocational Rehabilitation and Counseling, Chapter 31
The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Program is authorized by Congress under Title 38, Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 31. The mission of VR&E is to help veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs. For veterans with service-connected disabilities so severe that they cannot immediately consider work, VR&E offers services to improve their ability to live as independently as possible. To receive an evaluation for VR&E services, a veteran must have received, or will receive a discharge that is other than dishonorable and have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10%.
