Choosing U-M
Children, Spouses, and other Dependents
Support during your education
Many student veterans are older than the traditional college student, and some come to campus with spouses, children, or other dependents. As a student at the University of Michigan, many campus resources also welcome your family. For example, you can use University Health Service as your primary care facility for your family's medical needs.
Your spouse may need assistance finding employment or getting settled in the Ann Arbor community. A great resource at U-M is the Center for the Education of Women. CEW is open to men and women, whether part of the campus community or the general community. Career resources available include: a career resource library, individual counseling by appointment or on a walk-in basis, programs on career and related issues, information on financial aid and scholarships, U of M resources and procedures, and local and national networks. Small emergency grants are available for UM students.
CEW is located at 330 East Liberty, near S. Division, on the second floor of the Michigan Square Building. Hours are Monday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The University also has resources to help students with children. A list of child care options is available online at:
http://www.studentswithchildren.umich.edu/ccresources.
A child care subsidy may also be available from the Office of Financial Aid.
Benefits
Some veterans education benefits may transfer or be available to the children or dependents of eligible veterans if unused. Please see the VA website or the VA Certifying Official in the Office of the Registrar for eligibility information. If you do qualify for benefits, you are treated the same as the actual student veterans at U-M in most cases.
