U-M Recognized as Military Friendly School!
GI Jobs magazine has released its "Military Friendly Schools" list for 2011. This honor ranks U-M Ann Arbor in the top 15% of universities, colleges and trade-schools nationwide. It recognizes the steps we have taken to embrace our Veteran and Military community on campus. Also on the list were the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, and the University of Michigan - Flint!
Starting late April, more than 7,000 schools nationwide were polled on what they offer veterans and military students at their schools. An academic advisory board determined the criteria and weighting for the list. The advisory board included the VA director of education services and our very own Derek Blumke, U-M Alum and President of Student Veterans of America. Quoting Derek from the G.I. Jobs press release " The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools will offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience. It’s especially important now with so many schools competing for military students."
The University of Michigan is proud of its long history of supporting the military: our WWII training centers, our 4 current ROTC programs, the founding of Student Veterans of America, our Student Veterans Assistance Program and our full participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program. We are happy to receive this honor and look forward to serving our veteran and military students in the future, students who were "Leaders and the Best" long before entering our University!
U-M Renews Commitment to Yellow Ribbon Program:
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor will again fully participate with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program). For the 2010-2011 academic year the University and the VA will cover all unmet tuition need for individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate of the Post 911 GI Bill (CH33).
According to the VA web site you may be eligible if:
- You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
- You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001;
- You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
The Yellow Ribbon Program will only cover unmet tuition not covered under the Post 9/11 GI bill.

$1,000 Scholarship available to any OIF/OEF Veteran!
A generous private donor is providing two $1,000 scholarships for the Fall 2010 semester. This scholarship is for veterans who were deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq).
The Fall 2010 OIE/OEF Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to United States armed forces personnel who served in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom who are/will be full-time students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for the Fall 2010 semester.

Applications are due no later than July 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm – late applications will not be reviewed.

Eligibility
Service Members of the United States Military who served in Afghanistan or Iraq or contiguous air space as defined in federal regulations on or after October 24, 2001 for Afghanistan or March 19, 2003 for Iraq. You must have served at least 60 days in either conflict or have been released from deployment due to a disability or injury if prior than 60 days.
You must be enrolled, full-time, in a degree granting course of study at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Award
Two (2) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to selected participants. The Office of New Student Programs will review all applicants and award the scholarships based on the merits presented in the application. All award decisions are final.
Award Notification
Eligible Applicants who are awarded the OIF/OEF scholarship will be notified of the award in writing. In order to accept the award the recipient must provide the Office of New Student Programs an acceptance letter within 5 business days after notification is received. Written acceptance must include a thank-you letter to the donor.

> Reminder: VA Chapter 33 benefits do not cover Winter Break period.
The Post 911 GI bill tuition benefits and housing allowance are paid for active semesters only. Therefore during Winter Break when there are no classes no payments can be made for that time. Any money you normally receive, such as your housing allowance will be prorated for the time you are in classes. So you will receive a smaller housing allowance for December since you will be in class from December 1st to December 24th. Similarly your January benefits will not start until January 4th. Money you receive for housing or other allowances will be prorated to reflect any breaks in your studies.
> Emergency Funds Now Available through VA and U-M Financial Aid
The Department of Veteran Affairs has been authorized to give out checks for up to $3000 to students who have applied for educational benefits but have not received a government payment. This money will be taken out of the housing stipend (if applicable) or CH 30 checks.
Veterans can apply online at www.va.gov, starting Oct. 2. The online application will guide Veterans through the process to supply needed information. Online applicants will receive their emergency payments through the mail after processing.
Students can also go to one of 57 VA regional centers, with a photo ID and their class schedule, and request an advance payment of their educational benefit.

The Office of the Registrar has developed the most recent guidelines and forms for accessing all of your benefits while attending the University of Michigan. Use these pages to find out about VA programs or get your Veterans Certification Form, fill it out online and mail or fax it to the Registrar (no more need to stop in).

The Department of Veteran Affair's application for the New Post 9/11 GI-Bill will be available May 1, 2009. Eligible students should apply on-line at: http://www.vba.va.gov/pubs/forms/VBA-22-1990-ARE.pdf.
From the VA - READ CAREFULLY!
"The form requires that individuals currently eligible for another education benefit make an irrevocable election from their existing program to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Typically individuals who are eligible for more than one benefit may use a combined total of 48 months of entitlement. Therefore, for those individuals eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) program, please be advised that if you have entitlement remaining under the MGIB, the number of months of Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement you will be eligible for will be equal to the number of months remaining under MGIB. However, if you exhaust all of your MGIB entitlement, then you may be entitled to a maximum of 12 additional months of entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill."
After the Department of Veteran Affairs reviews the application, they will send a Certificate of Eligibility letter to the veteran if you are eligible for the Post 9/11 GI-Bill benefit. A copy of this letter should be brought to the Office of the Registrar located at 1207 LSA Building. The student veteran will then complete a Veteran Certification of Enrollment form. This form must be completed and turned in each semester in which benefits are requested.
If you plan to stay under the chapter 30, or Montgomery GI Bill, you do not have to submit a new application. Remember that payments for the Post 9/11 GI Bill will not be processed until August 1st of 2009 and no retroactive payment will be made. Fall semester 2009 will be the first semester you can use the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

When an incoming student is accepted and pays their enrollment deposit they will be assigned a Student Veteran Mentor. That person will then be their guide to the university and meet them periodically throughout their first semester in college.
