Summer Term Transfer OrientationSummer Half-Term OrientationOrientation will serve as an introduction to the University community, giving you a capsulated view of the variety of opportunities available to you. During orientation, you will complete all necessary procedures for class registration including placement testing, general information sessions, and academic advising. Orientation also gives you a chance to meet other new students. Orientation is required for all new students, including transfers from University of Michigan Flint and Dearborn campuses.
Program ScheduleLanguage placement examinations will begin at 8:00 a.m. prior to check-in for Summer Half Term Orientation. If you are planning on taking one of these examinations, proceed directly to the testing location. (See below) You can check-in to orientation immediately following your examination. If you are not taking a language placement examination, check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. Check in in the foyer outside of Angell Hall, Auditorium C. Following check-in, you will attend a welcome and information session, have your picture taken for your MCard, go on a Campus Tour, and participate in academic advising from your school or college and register for classes. The program will be completed by 6:00 p.m. Students should plan on being available for the entire day. Program DatesSummer Half Term Transfer Orientation will be Tuesday, June 24, 2008.
Placement Exam InformationAll students in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, as well as students in the Residential College, Honors Program, or the Comprehensive Studies Program are required to take the Language Placement Exam, if you have ever taken a language, regardless of previous credit received. If you have NO previous language experience, you do not need to take a placement exam. Students studying Piano or Voice Peformance, Musical Theatre, or Theatre Performance (Acting) in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance are required to take a language placement exam. Other students in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance are not required to take a language placement exam, but are encouraged to do so. Students in the College of Engineering are not required to take a language placement exam, but you may receive academic credit for the exam. Students in Nursing, Kinesiology, and Dental Hygiene do not need to take language placement exams. Please read the following information very carefully. The placement exam schedule determines your check-in time, and it is imperative that you know when and where the exams are offered. Placement exams in the following languages will be offered during orientation: German, French, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Your arrival time for orientation is contingent upon whether or not your are taking a placement exam. If you are not taking a placement exam, you will check-in at 9:00 a.m. If you are taking a placement exam, the exams will be from 8:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. on the morning of your orientation session. You will then check-in to the program upon completing your exam. Orientation check-in begins at 9:00 a.m., and you will be given ample time to check-in upon completing your exam. Please Note: You should go directly to the exam site on your orientation date. Plan to arrive at the exam by 7:45 a.m. There is limited parking close to the testing site, so allow yourself enough time to find and park in the city structures. Do not be late! Late arrivals will not be allowed to take these exams and will have to make alternate arrangements to do so following the completion of their orientation program. The Spanish placement exam will be administered in Angell Hall, Auditorium C. Enter Angell Hall through the main entrance off State St. (the entrance with the columns), and proceed straight to the glass doors that say “Angell Hall Auditoriums.” Travel down one flight of stairs, and follow the signs to the Angell Hall Auditoriums. The French placement exam will be administered in 1449 Mason Hall. The Hebrew, Italian, and Russian exams are all administered in the same room, 1448 Mason Hall. For both Mason Hall rooms, enter Mason Hall through the north entrance. Take the staircase or elevator on your immediate right up to the 1st floor. Turn right and go down the hallway. Room 1449 will be mid-way down on your left. Room 1448 will be on your right. German Exam Location: The German Exam will be in the Language Resource Center, 2001 Modern Languages Bldg. (MLB). The MLB is located on the corner of Thayer and Washington Streets, right next to the Burton Tower, and in-between the Frieze Bldg. and Hill Auditorium. Use the southwest entrance to the MLB. Go up one flight of stairs and turn left. The Language Resource Center will be halfway down the hall, on the right. Latin Exam Location: The Latin exam will be administered in Room 2115A Angell Hall. Enter Angell Hall through the main entrance off State St. Go up one flight of stairs to the second floor. Turn left toward the Department of Classical studies. The classroom is halfway down on your right-hand side, directly across from the departmental office. Exams for Other Languages
What to BringPlease bring a copy of any CB or AP exam results, and your most recent college transcript (if applicable). You will receive a packet of campus-related information at orientation. You will also receive information specific to your academic school or college when you meet with your academic advisor at orientation. You should also bring a pencil if you are taking a placement exam, money for parking, and comfortable clothing and shoes for the campus tour. Program Fees for Summer Half Term Transfer OrientationThe fee for Summer-Half Term Transfer Orientation will be $83. Students will be asked to sign a payment agreement upon arrival at orientation acknowledging that the fee will be billed to their student accounts. Please do not send the fee in the mail. You do not need to pay your tuition before registering for classes at orientation. Accommodations for Summer-Half Term Transfer OrientationWe do not provide overnight accommodations as part of Transfer Orientation. However, for numbers of local hotels, please call the Campus Information Center at 734-764-INFO. For off-campus housing information, call 734-763-3164. If you have a residence hall contract, contact the Housing Information Office about when you can move into your residence hall. Participants with DisabilitiesONSP will coordinate any arrangements you may need while on campus. Services provided include special testing and testing assistance, transportation, and tours around campus. Mark the appropriate box when registering for orientation, and a member of our staff will contact you prior to your program to discuss your needs. RegistrationStudents who have paid their enrollment deposit will begin receiving orientation information via email in mid-April. This email will instruct students to proceed to the Undergraduate Orientation section of Wolverine Access. The online orientation information will provide students with detailed instructions on the registration process. In order to register for orientation, you will need your U-M uniqname and password. Information about your uniqname will be emailed to you by the Information Technology Central Services (ITCS) shortly after you pay your enrollment deposit. You will receive a confirmation of your assigned orientation date via email within one week of registering for orientation. Your confirmation email will include specific information regarding check-in, parking, and what to bring to orientation. |
