We support Transfer students

Transfer Connections, a mentoring program for incoming summer, fall and winter transfer students to the University of MIchigan ackowledges the unique and differing needs that exist between first-year undergraduate students and transfer students, despite their shared experience as new students at the University of Michigan. We plan targeted activities and events to help transfer students feel at home at the University of Michigan.

About Transfer Connections

  • Through Transfer Connections, participants receive mentoring that will provide them with an immediate link to University of Michigan resources, information and diverse academic and co-curricular support networks.
  • To effectively address transfer students' specific needs, this program operates independently of the University Mentorship Program for first-year students
  • Transfer Connections is open to LSA transfer students only.
  • The program runs fall-spring, including summer/fall and winter transfers, with particular emphasis on participants' first semester at Michigan, through directed academic and social programs and activities.

Mission:

Transfer Connections provides an opportunity for new transfer students to connect with mentors and access a network of faculty and staff who are knowledgeable about navigating the University of Michigan. Transfer Connections seeks to ease the transition of transfer students into the University of Michigan.

THROUGH THE MAIZE: A NEWSLETTER FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS

This monthly newsletter contains general news and advice geared toward new transfer students about housing, transfer credits, campus employment, and other useful tips about navigating the Maize and Blue. During the fall-spring semesters, the newsletter is emailed to Transfer Connections participants only and pdf versions are available here. Read our newsletters!

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do transfer students find out about Transfer Connections?

All LSA transfer students receive a recruitment email and are encouraged to complete an application. They also find out about TC at the Transfer Admissions fair in April, as well as Transfer Orientation.

Are transfer students automatically enrolled?

Transfer students are not automatically enrolled, but all are welcome to apply for selection according to their academic and extra-curricular interests and the availability of mentors.

Can current transfer students who already attend University of Michigan receive mentoring through Transfer Connections?

At this time, the program targets incoming transfer students only.

Program Goals:

  • Provide individual guidance and support to each transfer student participant over the course of his or her transition process.
  • Facilitate easy access to information regarding class enrollment, locations of campus facilities, use of computer network systems and other essential information through newsletters and regular communication from the Transfer Connections staff.
  • Present opportunities to socialize and interact with other University of Michigan students and nurture academic and co-curricular interests through informational sessions and workshops.
  • Address the needs of transfer students by accomodating their often busy schedules, particularly those that commute and/or have multiple commitments.

Program Structure:

Transfer Connections student staff is comprised of six Transfer Mentors, who are currently enrolled, former transfer students that work as student staff members in the Office of New Student Programs. They are supervised by the ONSP Mentorship Graduate Intern.

Each Transfer Connections Mentor is matched with a group of new transfer students.

Transfer Connections Mentors are responsible for organizing activities to assist in students' transition into UM, and communicate regularly with participants through newsletters and announcements. Mentors meet with students on a one-on-one or or group basis.
