How to Sign Up for Orientation
If you are a newly admitted student for the winter term, and have already paid your $200 enrollment deposit, you will receive an email to your University of Michigan email address (youruniqname@umich.edu) in mid-November with instructions for signing up for Winter Orientation. If you have not yet paid your enrollment deposit, your email invitation to attend orientation will be sent to you approximately 1-2 weeks after you have paid your enrollment deposit.

Upon receiving your email invitation, you will be instructed to carefully read through the Online Orientation Information (OOI). This OOI will give you complete details about the orientation programs. To view the Online Orientation Information, please visit http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu. Click on "Undergraduate Orientation". General information is listed below for your reference.

If you are admitted in late December, you may not receive the orientation information. Go to http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu and click on "Undergraduate Orientation" to review the Online Orientation Information and register for orientation.

Preparing for Winter Orientation

Orientation will be a busy – and possibly overwhelming – day. In order to make the most out of your orientation experience, you should do the following things before coming to orientation:

  1. Make your travel plans and allow enough time so that you can check-in for orientation on Monday, January 7. If you are moving into a University residence hall, you should plan to move in on January 6.
  1. Submit a photo for your MCard. All new students should submit a photo to be used on your MCard no later than December 10, 2012. To submit your photo online, visit www.finance.umich.edu/treasury/mcard/timesaver for information regarding photo specifications and the submission process. If you submit your photo before December 10, your MCard will be completed and ready to pick up during Orientation. If you have any questions, contact the M-Card Center at 734-936-2273 between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. If you were admitted late and were unable to submit your photo before December 10, you must visit the MCard Center in person prior to Orientation check-in on Monday, January 7 to take your MCard photo. The MCard Center is located at 1011 Student Activities Bldg., and opens at 8:00 a.m.
  1. Take the Wolverine Access tutorial online at www.onsp.umich.edu/wolverine_access/onspwatutorial5.html Wolverine Access is the system that you will use to register for your classes. Your academic advisors will expect you to already be familiar with this system when you meet with them to register for courses. This tutorial will introduce you to the services available through Wolverine Access, and it will prepare you for course selection and registration at Orientation.
  1. Watch for email messages to your UMICH email account from your academic advising school/college, and follow all instructions that they may contain. Some schools and colleges send information and surveys ahead of time, and you will be expected to be familiar with the information and to have completed the surveys prior to attending orientation.
  1. If you are in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) or the School of Education (SOE) and plan to take mathematics courses at U-M, or are a first year student (except those entering the School of Nursing), you should take the online mathematics placement exam prior to attending orientation.
  1. Take the Online Spanish Exam, if you intend to take Spanish during your U-M career and if required or encouraged by your academic school/college.
  1. All first-year students in LSA, Art & Design, Kinesiology, Music, and Nursing must complete the Online Writing Self-Placement Essay and Questions.
  1. Determine whether or not you need to take the chemistry placement exam, or a language placement exam. These exams determine what time your orientation program begins on January 7.
  1. Print out a Central Campus map from campusinfo.umich.edu/article/central-campus-map On this map, locate the check-in location, Angell Hall, and placement exam locations (if you are required to take them). Plan to allow yourself enough time to get to your placement exam and check-in locations on time.
