Winter Admits

Welcome to the University of Michigan!

Congratulations on your admission for the Winter Term!

We look forward to working with you as you start your journey as a Michigan Wolverine. Orientation is required for all new first-year and transfer, degree-seeking students. Orientation for the Winter 2022 term will include virtual and in-person components.

Stay tuned for emails in November with details about orientation requirements.

Virtual, synchronous sessions will take place in December, and on-campus, in-person programming will be held on Jan. 4, 2022 from 12-5PM. We're looking forward to seeing you soon.

Update: The Office of New Student Programs (ONSP) is committed to ensuring a successful academic and personal transition into the university community. We are here to help and provide guidance, answer questions, address concerns, and learn from our incoming students.

In light of the developing situation with the COVID-19 Omicron variant, and out of an abundance of caution, ONSP has made the decision to cancel our large group in-person component of orientation for January 4. We will instead be offering smaller scale opportunities for new students to get to know our campus and other new students throughout the first week of class during the winter term. Incoming Wolverines, watch your email for more information on these events shortly.

By completing Orientation, you will have an opportunity to learn about campus, meet with an academic advisor, and register for your first semester of classes.

If you have any questions, contact the Office of New Student Programs at (734) 764-6413 or email

By participating in Orientation you will:

  • Understand the academic and community expectations of a University of Michigan student.
  • Develop an academic plan with an advisor from your school or college.
  • Become familiar with resources available to UM students.
  • Meet with an academic advisor and register for your first term of classes.

Orientation is a program required for all new undergraduates. After you have been admitted to UM and paid the EDR, you will receive an email in November with more information about the Orientation Process.

Please be sure to do the following to prepare for Orientation:

1. Pay the $300 Enrollment Deposit

Pay the $300 enrollment deposit

This deposit guarantees your spot in the Winter Term and triggers many other processes for you to become an enrolled student. If you do not pay the enrollment deposit, or do not have it waived by the University, you will not be able to complete orientation and register for classes.

2. Create your Uniqname

Create your uniqname

Your uniqname is your official University of Michigan computing account and email address.  Once the University receives your Enrollment Deposit, it takes about 2 days before you will be able to set up your uniqname, and it may take another 24-48 hours for your uniqname to officially become active. Your uniqname is also your new email address. For example, if your uniqname is newstudent, your new university email address is "". Please check your emails regularly to this account as all university communications will be directed to it. Information about Orientation will be sent to this email in mid-November.

3. Wait for Information about Orientation to be released in November.

Please check back closer to the Winter 2022 term. More information about orientation will be available in November.
