Six Steps of Orientation

Only students who have accepted their admission to the Fall 2022 Term and have received the, “[FOR YOU] Fall 2022 Orientation Information” email to their U-M email account are eligible to begin completing Orientation. Information is emailed to students who have paid their enrollment deposit or had it waived starting in mid-April.

Please review the overview of Orientation page and your “[FOR YOU] Fall 2022 Orientation Information” email if you have not done so already. This page is to provide a resource for more information about the 6 Steps of Orientation and how to complete them. In addition, there are a few other tasks to complete that are included as well, such as how to Submit an Mcard photo, Learning about Wolverine Access, Updating Your Current Address, and Applying to Marching Band! Please review the tabs below:  

Step 1: Register for an Academic Advising Date

Register for a Virtual Academic Advising Date. For instructions on how to register, please see the How to Register page.

The Virtual Academic Advising Date will consist of academic advising, advising activities as planned by your Academic Unit, and registering for Fall term classes.

Academic Units will email students directly within one week prior to their scheduled day to provide advising activity information, timing, and how to participate in the session


Important things to know prior to registering:

ACADEMIC UNIT

For the purpose of Orientation, the school/college/program you were admitted to is referred to as your Academic Unit.

EXPECTATIONS

  • Virtual Academic Advising Dates are for students and advisors only, if parents/guests are present, you may be asked to reschedule.
  • The sessions dates available to you are set based on your Academic Unit's availability. You should plan to be available to participate virtually on your Academic Advising Date between 8 am - 6 pm Eastern Time, without other conflicts. While you will not be busy entirely from 8 am - 6 pm, you should not have any other conflicts on your session until you receive your schedule from your Academic Unit. If you are unable to participate in all activities on your Academic Advising Date, it will cause a delay in your registration for classes and you will be rescheduled for a later date.
  • You should also be prepared to be in a distraction-free environment with an electronic device and internet access, if possible.  If you have concerns about accessing a device or internet, please email onsp@umich.edu or call 734-764-6413 as soon as possible.

TIME ZONES

 If you are in a time zone other than Eastern, you can note that on your registration. Instructions to update your current address are also included on this page. Please follow the instructions under “Update Your Current Address in Wolverine Access.”

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES

  • Your Academic Advising Date advising activities and schedule will be emailed to you directly by your Academic Unit 2 - 7 days prior to your session. It is important that you check you U-M email regularly for this information and save it to be prepared to participate in advising and course registration activities.
Step 2: Complete the Virtual Orientation Course

What is the Virtual Orientation Course?

After you have successfully completed Step 1 and registered for an Academic Advising Date, you must complete the virtual orientation course. You will learn more about the course and receive access in mid-May. The course covers information about resources and services that can help you be successful here at Michigan, as well as an overview of campus traditions, processes, and culture, so that you will feel like a Wolverine from day one. You will have access to this information throughout your first year at Michigan so if you ever forget something, you can always come back to this course for answers. 

 

When Should I Complete It?

The course takes approximately two hours to complete and can be completed at your own pace, at least one week prior to your Academic Advising Date. Failure to complete the course will delay your ability to register for courses. It is important to be prepared, so utilize the resources and tutorials on the ONSP website and the virtual orientation course to familiarize yourself with Wolverine Access, course guides, and the backpacking system to be ready to register on your Academic Advising Date.

We know Online Placement Exams might sound scary, however they are an important tool used by your Academic Advisor to help you navigate the different courses and subject areas at U-M! Please review the Frequently Asked Questions below and then proceed to learn more about the Online Placements Exams offered and how to take them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Exams Should I Take?

Review the Transfer Placement Exam Requirements Chart for information about which placement exams are required by your Academic Unit and use the links in the next section titled, "Step 3: How and When to Take Online Placement Exams" to access the exams.

Please note that Placement Exam Requirements are set by Academic Units, not ONSP. ONSP cannot grant you an exception to take a placement. While you may already have transfer or AP credit in a subject, you should still take the Online Placement Exam, unless otherwise noted.

Online Placement Exams are a tool used by your Academic Advisor to help guide course registration. Even if you might not plan to continue in a certain subject, the placement is helpful if you change your mind. Some placements are in place due to Academic Degree Requirements by your School/College.

How Do I Prepare?

Have your uniqname and password readily available. Be sure your computer is fully charged (and with enough battery if you are away from an electrical outlet). Arrange to take all online tests in a quiet area, free from distractions (TVs, phones, etc.), and allow yourself ample time, as indicated in each section. Placement Exams are an opportunity to find the right fit of classes for you at U-M! You do not need to study in advance.

When Should I Take the Exam(s)?

The sooner the better! Generally, it is recommended to complete placement exams at least 2 weeks prior to your Academic Advising Date to guarantee results. Some tests have a shorter turnaround time for results, which are noted below each exam link. Failure to take Online Placement Exams prior to your Academic Advising Date may results in delays in registering for classes in that subject area.

Please note not all subjects are available to take online, in advance. In those circumstances, you will work with the department to arrange for placement prior to the term you plan on enrolling in the coursework. This will not impact your ability to register for other classes, in other subjects.

Where Can I See My Results?

All test results will be given to your Academic Advisor and reviewed with you during your Academic Advising Date. Results cannot be provided ahead of time by the Office of New Student Programs or the individual departments.

Students who need to arrange for extended testing time/accommodations for Online Placement Exams should contact the department of the exam directly. Please find the appropriate contact information for the placements below:

Accommodations made for placement tests may not reflect how those same accommodations will be made during the school year. It is important that students with disabilities contact the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) as soon as possible to discuss your school year needs.

MATH PLACEMENT EXAM  

Do I have to take the Math Placement Exam?
Review the Transfer Placement Exam Requirements Chart for information about which Online Placement Exams are required by your Academic Unit.
The Math Placement should be taken regardless of AP or Transfer Credit. Your Advisor will use the placement result and any prior experience in Math coursework to advise on next coursework.

When is it available and when should I take it?
The Math Placement is available to take on April 4th - May 3rd and May 11th - August.
Complete the Math Placement at least 3 business days prior to your Academic Advising Date.

How long is the Math Placement?
The standard test time limit is 50 minutes unless an extended time request is made.
Complete an Orientation Assistance Request Form to request extended time on the Math Placement. 

How do I take it?

Go to the Math Placement website and read the instructions. 
Select "Instr" on the left hand side.
Read the information and then select "Take the Placement Test" at the bottom of the page.

You will need to have your uniqname and password to access the test.

Enter your uniqname in all lowercase letters and without the "@umich.edu."
Using a private window on your browser can help if you receive an error message when trying to log in to the test.

UWrite

UWrite is an online self-placement tool that guides you to reflect on your writing experiences and learning preferences, and helps you select First-Year Writing Requirement courses that fit your interests and needs.

Do I have to take UWrite?
Review the Transfer Placement Exam Requirements Chart for information about which placement exams are required by your Academic Unit.

How and when will students access UWrite?
UWrite is available online. Students should complete UWrite 2 weeks before their virtual advising date during Orientation.

How long to complete UWrite?
It will take you about 15 minutes to complete the self-placement module, though you may want to spend more time to explore your course options thoroughly. Please be mindful that you should submit your responses to UWrite at least two weeks prior to your Orientation session.

What happens after students complete UWrite?

  1. Students will receive an email summary of their responses to UWrite, which will include the courses that interested them.
  2. Academic Advisors will receive the same summary and use it to discuss students’ choices with them at virtual advising sessions during Orientation.

LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAMS:

Please note that placements are used for placement only and some departments may require a results validation process if you are placing out of a degree requirement.

Do I have to take the Language Placement Exam?
Review the Transfer Placement Exam Requirements Chart for information about which placement exams are required by your Academic Unit.

Transfer credit is applied differently based on the language department and your Academic Unit’s transfer credit policies. You may still need to take a placement regardless of previous credit. Please visit the website of the language department for more information.

If you have no prior experience in a language you would like to study, you may register for the first course in the language sequence. Otherwise, you should take a language placement test if required by your Academic Unit and/or you plan to continue in that language. 

LSA Students: A student whose first language is not English and who attended a high school where English was not the language of instruction does not need to take a language placement.

When are they available and when should I take it?
Availability varies based on the language. More information is available below.

Some tests are online and some include virtual interviews. Take your placement test, including any virtual interviews, at least TWO WEEKS prior to your registered Academic Advising Date so that your results can be processed and made available.

You are still be eligible to participate in advising if you cannot complete the language placement two weeks in advance, however you may not be able to enroll in the language class until your results are in the system. It is strongly encouraged that students take the language placement exam PRIOR TO their Orientation session. Even if you are unsure that you wish to continue in that language, the placement result will help to have the necessary permissions to enroll if you do wish to continue.

How long are the Language Placements?
Length and process of the placement varies based on the language. Some tests are online and some include virtual interviews.

How do I take the Language Placements?
The process to take the language placements varies based on the language.

Not all languages will be available to take online in advance as some may be offered as a proctored exam in a later term. You can find more information about other languages from our Language Department websites and contact information page.

Below is a list of Languages offered online, as part of Orientation:

Arabic Placement Exam - Available virtually on select dates including May 26 at 11am-2pm; June 10 at 9am-12pm; July 8 at 9am-12pm

The Arabic Placement is a virtually proctored placement offered a few times over the summer. Registration is required on the Middle East Studies Website. If possible, please register for a placement that occurs prior to your scheduled orientation session in order to allow your placement results to be available to your Academic Advisor. Please review the Middle East Studies Website for more information and contact information. Contact mesarabicprogram@umich.edu for any questions or accommodations for the Arabic Placement.


Chinese Placement - Available on select dates: May 10, May 24, June 1, June 9, June 17, June 27, July 6, July 14, July 25, August 2, August 12

The Chinese Placement is virtually offered a multiple times over the summer. Registration is required. If possible, please register for a placement that occurs at least a week earlier prior to your scheduled orientation session in order to allow your placement results to be available to your Academic Advisor. Once students register, they receive detailed instructions including the exam link via email a couple of days before their exam date. Filipino Placement - Available 

The Filipino Placement consists of an online placement test in Canvas, followed by scheduling a placement interview with Irene Gonzaga (igonzaga@umich.edu). Please visit the Asian Languages and Culture’s website and click on the tab for “Southeast Asian Language Tests” for more information. Contact Irene Gonzaga at igonzaga@umich.edu for questions or accommodations for the Filipino placement.


French Placement Exam - Available 

The French Placement Exam is a Canvas placement Test. Self-enroll for the French Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. After you enroll, you can go to the course and begin reading the instructions for the placement. Contact rll.placement@umich.edu for questions. Complete an RLL accommodation form for extended time on the French placement.


German Placement Exam - Available

The German Placement is a Canvas placement test followed by a brief Zoom interview. Self-enroll in the German Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. After you enroll, you can go to the course and begin reading the instructions for the placement. After completing the test on Canvas, you will be prompted to schedule an interview with the German department (we recommend scheduling the interview when prompted, but have included the link here in case you are unable to do so). Modern Hebrew Placement - Students must schedule an exam no later than August 17.

Indonesian Placement Exam - Available May 1 - August 31

The Indonesian Placement is a Canvas placement test and a Zoom interview with the Asian Languages and Cultures department. Self-enroll in the Indonesian Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. After you enroll, you can go to the course and begin reading the instructions for the placement. Italian Placement Exam - Available

The Italian Placement Exam is a Canvas placement test. Self-enroll for the Italian Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. Japanese Placement Exam - Available May 9 - August 16

The Japanese Placement is a Canvas placement test and a virtual interview with the Asian Languages and Cultures department. Self-enroll in the Japanese Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. After you enroll, you can go to the course and begin reading the instructions for the placement. Korean Placement Exam Students can choose from the following exam periods: May 2-6; May 30-June 3; June 6-10; June 27-July 1; July 18-22; or August 8-12.

The Korean Placement includes an online Canvas placement and may be followed by a virtual interview. Students must register. Once they register, they will receive a link to the exam. Visit the Asian Languages and Cultures website for additional information and instructions. Latin Placement Exam - Available

Russian Placement Exam - Available

The Russian Placement is a Canvas placement test, followed by an interview. Self-enroll in the Russian Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. Spanish Placement Exam  - Available April 4th - August

You will automatically have access to the Spanish Placement from your Canvas Dashboard. If you have no prior experience in Spanish, you do not need to take the placement, however all incoming students will have access to the test if they need to take it. Thai Placement Exam - Available May 1 - August 15

The Thai Placement is a Canvas placement test and followed by scheduling an interview. Self-enroll to the Thai Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. Vietnamese Placement Exam - Available June 15 - August 31

The Vietnamese Placement is a Canvas placement test and followed by scheduling an interview. Self-enroll in the Vietnamese Placement and click on “Enroll in this course” on the right hand side. After you enroll, you can go to the course and begin reading the instructions for the placement. Contact ThuyAnh Nguyen (tanguyen@umich.edu) to schedule a placement interview. Step 4: Academic Unit Pre-Advising Activities

Each Academic Unit has its own set of mandatory pre-advising activities. Examples of pre-advising activities might include an Academic Unit specific Canvas course, an Academic Unit website to review, or a pre-registration activity. Information about these will be included in the last section of the Virtual Orientation Course (step 2 of Orientation). You will need to have all of these activities completed before your Academic Advising Date. Your Academic Unit may also communicate tasks and information directly, so be sure to check your U-M email regularly!

Individual Academic School and College Instructions


Stamps School of Art & Design

  • Prior to your advising date, complete the Stamps School of Art & Design’s Transfer Orientation Canvas Course.
  • Two weeks prior to your advising date, you will receive an email to your U-M email from the Stamps School of Art & Design with additional information about your Academic Advising Date schedule, which will include introductions to the team members, one-on-one academic advising, and peer advising backpacking.

Ross School of Business

  • Complete Ross School of Business Transfer Canvas Course.
  • Watch for emails from the Ross School of Business for additional information about your Academic Advising schedule and activities, which will include one-on-one academic advising and an opportunity to meet other BBA students.

School of Education

  • Complete the School of Education Canvas Course. This course will provide you with information about the teacher education programs in general, as well as the specific one to which you've been admitted (Elementary or Secondary). It will also include instructions for how to prepare for your Academic Advising Date.
  • A required element of the School of Education canvas course is a one-on-one appointment with a School of Education academic advisor prior to the Academic Advising Date.
  • Backpack for courses. Remember to review the tutorials in the virtual orientation course for assistance and on our website under "Learn How to Use U-M's Course Registration System (Wolverine Access)."

College of Engineering

  • Complete the College of Engineering Transfer Canvas Course.
  • Watch for emails from your major department within the College of Engineering with additional information three days before your Academic Advising Date for the Zoom link and the schedule, which will include academic advising, course registration, and additional information specific to your program.

School of Information

  • Complete the School of Information Canvas Course.
  • Watch for emails late April to early May from the School of Information with important information about your Academic Advising date and schedule.

School of Kinesiology

  • Prior to your advising date, please complete the Kinesiology Canvas Course.
  • You will receive an email approximately 5 - 7 days prior to your assigned advising date, to your U-M email account, that will contain the relevant information for your advising date. You can anticipate that your advising date will entail an advising appointment in the morning; a tutorial on online scheduling and a live registration session in the afternoon as well as a presentation from our embedded CAPS counselor. You will end the day with an interactive session led by your Peer Advisors to get to know your classmates and start to build upon our community in Kinesiology. When signing up, please commit to participating in the entire day with your unit from your appointment (morning hours through 6:00 pm EST). This will set you up for the greatest success and ensure you do not miss any important information.

Attention College of Literature, Science, and the Arts Students

For students in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, you must identify the LSA academic advising subsections to which you belong. 

LSA is divided into the Newnan Advising Center (general LSA), the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP), the Honors Program, and the Residential College (RC). In your letter of admission, it will specify if you have been admitted to the Comprehensive Studies Program. Students who have been admitted to the Honors Program or the Residential College will receive information directly from those programs. All other students admitted to LSA will receive advising from the Newnan Advising Center.

College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (Newnan Advising Center)

  • Complete all activities listed in the MyAdvising Orientation portal.
  • Additional information with the Zoom link and time will show up in the MyAdvising Orientation portal one week before your Academic Advising Date.
  • Orientation will consist of a one hour meeting with an academic advisor and course registration. To make the most of your time, please be sure to complete all of the tasks on your MyAdvising portal at least two weeks in advance.
  • Check your U-M email for reminders about your Academic Advising Date.

College of Literature, Science, and the Arts -- Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP)

  • Complete the 2022 CSP Transfer Student Orientation Canvas Course.
  • Watch for emails from the Comprehensive Studies Program with the Zoom link and additional information one week before your Academic Advising Date for the schedule, which will include a large group presentation, an individual meeting with your academic advisor, and course registration.

College of Literature, Science, and the Arts -- Honors Program

  • Complete the LSA Honors Orientation Canvas Course.
  • Watch for emails from the LSA Honors Program with additional information one week before your Academic Advising Date for the schedule, which will include an individual meeting with your academic advisor, course registration, and a follow-up email after registration.

College of Literature, Science, and the Arts -- Residential College (RC)

  • Visit the Residential College website to view a presentation about the RC and prepare for academic advising.
  • Complete the Residential College Canvas Course.
  • Make sure your Canvas announcements are turned on as the Residential College will communicate with you via both your U-M email address and Canvas announcements.
  • Watch for emails from the Residential College with additional information one week before your Academic Advising Date for the schedule, which will include an individual meeting with your academic advisor and course registration.

College of Pharmacy

  • Complete the College of Pharmacy Canvas Course
  • Watch for emails from the College of Pharmacy with important information about your Academic Advising Date and schedule.

School of Public Health


School of Music, Theatre, and Dance (SMTD)

  • Complete the School of Music, Theatre and Dance Canvas Course.  
  • Sign up and complete a Piano Placement Exam prior to your Academic Advising Date (not required for Dance, Piano, Organ, or Theatre & Drama students). Information about this exam will be sent to you directly from SMTD via email.
  • Complete the Music Theory Placement Exam (not required for Dance or Theatre & Drama students). Musical Theatre students will take the MT Music Theory Placement Exam.
  • Watch for emails from SMTD one week ahead of your Academic Advising Date with more information, which will include a Zoom link and schedule of academic advising, backpacking, the opportunity to meet other SMTD students, and course registration.

Getting Familiar with Remote Advising Resources

Getting familiar with the different remote University of Michigan tools will help you be prepared for your academic advising activities and other virtual opportunities offered! Learn How to Use the U-M Course Registration System (Wolverine Access)

Wolverine Access is the system that you will use to register for your classes. Your Academic Advisors will expect you to already be familiar with this system for advising. There are several online tutorials available to assist you in learning Wolverine Access prior to Orientation:

Step 5: Participate in Your Virtual Academic Advising Date

You Academic Unit will email your U-M email with information about your session (including advising information and how to participate). Remember, it is required that you participate in all activities to be eligible to register for classes. Failure to attend any activities will delay registration and you will be rescheduled for a later Virtual Academic Advising Date.

If you have not received an email from your Academic Unit at least 2 days prior to your session, please try searching your U-M email for “Orientation” to find the email. If you still do not have the email, please contact us at onsp@umich.edu.

It is expected that you do not have any other plans scheduled on your Virtual Academic Advising Date to be sure you can fully participate in any required advising activities. It is also expected that you are in a location where you can fully engage in the activities with limited distractions (if possible). Activities will likely occur sometime between 8 am and 6 pm Eastern Time. You will be rescheduled if you are unable to participate in the assigned activities. If you have concerns about time zones, please follow the instructions to update your current address and include time zone on your registration for an Academic Advising Date.

Step 6: Attend In-Person Orientation and Welcome to Michigan Activities in Late August

All students will participate in a robust day of orientation programming at the end of August.

This in-person program is designed to aid in your transition to the U-M community. In August, you will be assigned a session date and time. If you are living in University Housing, sessions will be assigned to occur after your move-in date. On your assigned day, you will have an opportunity to get to know other new students, become familiar with our campus, participate in small group discussions, and learn more about resources and topics of interest.

We will also offer programming for the parents and families of our new students during this time as well. Further information on the parent and family program will be released throughout the summer.

Learn How to Use the U-M Course Registration System (Wolverine Access)

Wolverine Access is the system that you will use to register for your classes. Your academic advisors will expect you to already be familiar with this system on your Advising Date. There are several online tutorials available to assist you in learning Wolverine Access prior to Orientation:

Submit Your Mcard Photo

The Mcard is your official University of Michigan identification card. You will use it all over campus to identify yourself as a member of the university community. Mcards are printed and distributed by the Mcard Center. At this time, you should submit a photo to be used for your MCard. Your photo can be submitted online at: http://www.finance.umich.edu/treasury/mcard/timesaver.

Closer to the start of the term, the Mcard Center will communicate about Mcard distribution. Mcards will not be mailed. Government issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, military ID or passport) will be required when picking up the Mcard. If you have any questions, contact the MCard Center at 734-936-2273, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Update Your Current Address in Wolverine Access (for Time Zone Purposes)

Updating your current address will let us know where you are when completing virtual academic advising. This helps your Academic Unit know what time zone you are in. If you have not already updated your current address, you can do so by:

  • Going to https://wolverineaccess.umich.edu/collection/all/student-wolverine-access
  • Select “Student Business”
  • Log in with your uniqname and password
  • Select the tile “Campus Personal Information”
  • On the “Addresses” tab you should see the addresses the University has on record
  • Use the pencil icon next to the Current Local address to edit it
  • Update your address, press OK and then Save

For students who will be living on campus, please be sure to update your current address again when you move to campus.

Submit Your Audition for the Michigan Marching Band by July 14th (if applicable)
