Winter Term OrientationOrientation will serve as an introduction to the University community, giving you a capsulated view of the variety of opportunities available to you. During orientation, you will complete all necessary procedures for class registration including placement testing, general information sessions, and academic advising. Orientation also gives you a chance to meet other new students. Please note that orientation is required for all new students, including transfers from University of Michigan Flint and Dearborn campuses.
ATTENTION WINTER TERM ADMITS: If you have been admitted recently and have not yet signed up for orientation, you are required to attend orientation on Wednesday, January 2. After you pay your enrollment deposit, or have it waived, you may sign up for the January 2 orientation program at http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu. Click on "Undergraduate Orientation" and then click on "View Brochures". After you have carefully read the brochure, please select "Register for Orientation" to register for the January 2 program.
Placement ExamsPlacement examinations will begin prior to check-in for January's Orientation program. Placement exams for math and the writing placement are administered online and must be completed prior to coming to Michigan for orientation. Please see the First-Year Student Winter Orientation Brochure for complete details. If you did not receive an Orientation Brochure, they are available online at: http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu. Click on “Undergraduate Orientation”. On the Undergraduate Orientation screen, you will see a link on the left entitled, “view brochures”. On the View Brochures page, look under “Winter Term Admits” and then select the brochure that is appropriate for you (freshman, transfer, international).
The Chemistry exam will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Angell Hall, Auditorium A, prior to check-in. Students taking this exam should go directly to this exam. Exams begin promptly at 9:30, so you should plan to arrive early. Foreign language placement examinations will begin at 10:30 a.m. prior to check-in. If you are planning on taking one of these examinations, proceed directly to the testing site listed below:
Placement exams for Latin and German will not be available on January 2. Please see your orientation brochure for details about taking one of these exams.
Determining if You Must Take Placement Exams All students in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, as well as students in the Residential College, Honors Program, or the Comprehensive Studies Program are required to take the Language Placement Exam, if you have ever taken a language. If you have NO previous language experience, you do not need to take a placement exam. Students in the College of Engineering are not required to take a language placement exam, but you may receive academic credit for the exam. Students in Nursing and Kinesiology do not need to take language placement exams. Orientation Check inCheck in will begin at 11:15 a.m. for freshmen not taking placement exams. Freshmen taking placement exams should go to the check-in site immediately upon completion of the placement exam. Check-in will be in the foyer area outside of Angell Hall Auditorium C. If you are a transfer student, please click here for complete check-in information. Check in is located outside of Angell Hall Auditorium C.Angell Hall is at 435 S. State St. Following check-in, you will attend a welcome and information session, have your picture taken for your MCard, take placement exams, go on a Campus Tour, and participate in academic advising from your school or college and register for classes. The January Winter Orientation program is a 1-day program. The program will be completed by 6:30 p.m. Students are required to attend all portions of orientation. Program DateWinter Orientation will be Wednesday, January 2, 2008.
Program FeesThere is an orientation fee which must be paid separately from tuition. A fee of $83 is required for Winter Orientation. Students will be asked to sign a waiver upon arrival acknowledging that the fee will be billed to their student account. Please do not send the fee in the mail. You do not need to pay your tuition before registering for classes at orientation. HousingWe do not provide overnight accommodations as part of Winter Orientation. However, for numbers of local hotels, please call the Campus Information Center at 734-764-INFO. For off-campus housing information, call 734-763-3164. If you have a residence hall lease, you will be allowed to move into your residence hall prior to attending Winter Orientation. Contact the Housing Information office at 734-763-3164 for information. Participants with DisabilitiesONSP will coordinate any arrangements you may need while on campus. Services include special testing and testing assistance, wheel chair accessible rooms, and refrigerators for medication. Mark the appropriate box when registering for orientation, and a member of our staff will contact you prior to your program to discuss your needs. You may also wish to contact the Office for Services for Students with Disabilities, G-664 Haven Hall, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1045; 734- 763-3000 (phone), 936-3947 (fax), or 615-6921 (TTY). RegistrationOrientation information will be sent to you beginning in November once you have paid your enrollment deposit. This brochure will include detailed instructions on the registration process, and you may register for orientation online at Wolverine Access, by telephone, by fax, or by email using information provided in your orientation mailing. In order to register for orientation online, you will need your U-M uniqname and password. Information about your uniqname will be emailed to you by Information Technology Central Services (ITCS) shortly after you pay your enrollment deposit. Once you have your uniqname, you may look up the orientation brochures online at Wolverine Access. Once you have completed the registration process, you will receive confirmation of your assigned orientation date. Your confirmation will include specific information regarding check-in, travel and parking, and what to bring to orientation. If you misplace your confirmation letter, you may go online to Wolverine Access and print the confirmation page from there. If you were admitted late, you may not receive the orientation information. Go to http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu and click on "Undergraduate Orientation" then click on "View Brochures". After you have carefully read the brochure, you may sign up for orientation through Wolverine Access.
Before You Come to Orientation1. Take the Wolverine Access tutorial online at www.onsp.umich.edu/transfer_students/. This tutorial will introduce you to the services available through Wolverine Access, the U-M’s online database system, and it will prepare you for course selection and registration at Orientation. Your academic advisors will expect that you are comfortable using Wolverine Access to search for classes when you meet with them at Orientation. 2. Review the Orientation Brochure for details about accommodations, transportation, and parking. If you did not receive an Orientation Brochure, they are available online at: http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu. Click on “Undergraduate Orientation”. On the Undergraduate Orientation screen, you will see a link on the left entitled, “view brochures”. On the View Brochures page, look under “Winter Term Admits” and then select the brochure that is appropriate for you (freshman, transfer, international). 3. Freshmen should complete the online mathematics placement exam. See page 3 of the Freshman Winter Term Orientation Brochure for complete instructions. Transfer students do NOT need to take the online mathematics placement exam. 4. Make your travel plans and allow for enough time so that you can check-in for orientation on Wednesday, January 2 by the appropriate check-in time (see above). 5.
