International Orientation

 

You are strongly encouraged to apply for your U.S. student visa as soon as possible after you have received your certificate of eligibility document from the University of Michigan. It currently may take significant time for visa processing. Please allow at least a month to plan for your travel to the United States. You should plan to obtain your visa and arrive on campus in time to attend your school or college's academic orientation program. Academic programs at Michigan are very rigorous and demanding. It is critical that you time your arrival in Ann Arbor so that you can participate from the start in your required orientation program and you are ready to start classes at the beginning of the academic term.

If you are an F-1 or J-1 Visa holder, you must bring the original and a photocopy of the following documents: Your passport (picture page and current visa page); I-94 Card (small white card in passport) back and front; and the I-20 or DS-2019. Please make copies of these documents prior to attending orientation.

 

 

Information for Fall Term 2007 Admits

We are delighted that you have chosen to attend the University of Michigan. We have planned an orientation program especially for international students to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the University. International Undergraduate Student Orientation for Fall term 2007 begins on Friday, August 24, 2007 and concludes on Tuesday, August 28, 2007. All new students are required to attend orientation. If any of the following conditions apply to you, it is mandatory that you attend International Undergraduate Student Orientation.

  • You are a United States citizen educated abroad
  • You live outside the United States
  • You are in the United States on a temporary or student visa
  • You need to take the Academic English Evaluation as a condition of your admission (see your letter of admission for details)
  • You are an exchange student with the Office of International Programs or the College of Engineering

During the orientation program, we will be presenting key information on immigration matters, health insurance, and many campus resources. You will complete all necessary procedures for class registration including placement testing, general information sessions, and academic advising. Orientation will also be an opportunity for you to meet other new students and talk with current international and American students. You must attend orientation before you will be allowed to register for classes.

Note: If you feel that the International Undergraduate Student Orientation is not the appropriate orientation program for you, please contact our office. You may be eligible to attend a Summer Orientation program or the Fall Orientation program on August 28th – 30th.

Canadian Residents: We appreciate your familiarity with the American culture and want to give you a choice of orientation programs to attend. You may attend either the International Undergraduate Orientation program, August 24th-28th or Fall Orientation, August 28th-30th. If you opt to attend Fall Orientation instead of International Orientation, please indicate Fall Orientation on your registration form and fax it to the Office of New Student Programs at 734/764-6291.
