We are very excited to have you join us on campus soon. This e-mail describes some of the highlights of the Welcome to Michigan program, a series of events we have planned for you when you arrive to campus. Some events require you to register now, so follow the links below to reserve your space.

If you have questions about residence hall move-in, see Housing's move-in website. If you have other questions about becoming a student at Michigan, ask the Office of New Student Programs. See you soon!


Event highlights:

 

Pre-Convocation Dinner

Thursday, September 1,5-6pm, Michigan League Ballroom (2nd floor)

Enjoy dinner with members of the University community at the Michigan League prior to Convocation. The League will feature an Italian buffet for $13.75 per person ($10.50 for children 12 and under). Students and their families and guests are invited to attend the dinner in the historic League. Print out a reservation form on-line and make your reservations now. Tickets will be held at the door. Seating is limited, so orders are taken on a first-come basis. Please call (734) 763-4652 or e-mail progleague@umich.edu for more details about the buffet.

New Student Convocation

Thursday, September 1, Student performances begin at 6:20pm, ceremony at 7pm, Crisler Arena

This is the official kick-off to Welcome to Michigan and an introduction to the academic community. This ceremony is a Michigan tradition that includes messages from the president of the University, student government president, and several other representatives. Following the ceremony, students will head to Central Campus for Escapade & Artscapade.

Thursday, September 1, 8pm, Museum of Art

This event occurs right after Convocation and is a great introduction to the arts at Michigan . Music, interactive games, tours, and fine arts are all part of this fantastic event at the Museum of Art . When you're done here, walk across the street to...

Escapade

Thursday, September 1, 8pm, Michigan Union

 

 

Occurring at the same time as Artscapade, this event is a must! The Michigan Union comes alive with food, music, dancing, comedy and much more. There is so much to do, you won't know where to begin.

Maize Craze

Friday, September 2, 4-6:30pm , Palmer Field

 

You're not a Michigan Student until you experience Maize Craze! This outdoor pep rally before for tomorrow's game has become a major tradition and is guaranteed to make you laugh, sweat, and have a great time! Listen to the Marching Band, meet athletic coaches, participate in different activities, win prizes and eat dinner all at the same place!

Meijer Madness

Friday, September 2, 9pm-1am , Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. Meijer

 

Need to buy those last-minute items for your residence hall room? Want to win free prizes? Well this is the event for you! UM has teamed up with Meijer (area's largest mega-store) to present a night filled with shopping, games, music, free food, tons of prizes, and more! We provide continuous shuttle service all night.

Road to the Big House! UM Student Tailgate

Saturday, September 3, Noon-2 pm, Palmer Field

Road to the Big House! UM Student Tailgate - Saturday, September 3, Noon-2pm, Palmer Field This is THE pre-game student happening: Come get psyched for the big game while enjoying free food and connecting with other students, listening to DJ tunes, participating in contests, and joining in other pre-game activities. There will be prizes to win!
Be sure to come back for the Alumni Association's ESPN Gridiron Blow-out and Student Tailgate, September 10, 8-11am on Elbel Field; and the UM Student Tailgate, September 17, 9 - 11am on Palmer Field.

Recreational Sports Expo

Sunday, September 4, 11am-2pm , Palmer Field

Rec Sports Expo is an effort to provide new students information about all our programs and services. Our staff will be on hand to talk to everyone about their specific area or program, answer any questions, provide options and information, and just chat about what we offer. It also provides our 35 Club Sports a chance to recruit new students, and our other programs (Intramurals, Outdoor Adventures, and Challenge Program) to highlight their upcoming events. Join the fun and see what's available for you within Rec Sports!

The Great Indoors

Sunday, September 4, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm

Come and Explore The Great Indoors at the Shapiro Library! The library can be an overgrown jungle, but with the right tour guide, you'll find yourself on the path to wild and wonderful things! Library staff will be giving tours and will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the library. We'll also have raffles, giveaways, games and prizes, and even free pizza!

We are caught in times of political correctness, where "saying' the right things are worlds away from "doing" the right thing. Considered one of the most inclusive sessions on diversity, you will learn how the human spirit can build coalitions, not blame, with groups who never thought they had anything in common with one another.

Community Plunge - Creating CHANGE through action

Monday, September 5, 10:30am-2:30pm Michigan Union Anderson Room

Community Plunge is an exciting event organized to introduce (or re-introduce) incoming and returning students to some of the ways they can get involved in service and social action during their college experience. The sites for this event will include homeless shelters, environmental clean-up and food preparation among many others. Through service and reflection, students will become empowered to make a difference on campus and in the surrounding communities. This is also an opportunity to meet new students and begin to learn about how UM students are plunging into social change!

Lunch will be provided for all participants. Students are encouraged to pre-register for the event due to limited space .

Community Dialogues - ExCHANGE

Monday, Septmber 5, 2:30-4:30pm Palmer Commons Great Lakes Rooms

Come have a chance to engage in conversations with people you have been "changing" with all day. This is a great opportunity to talk about your cultural similarities, differences and what diversity at Michigan is all about. Snacks, door prizes and a chance to meet new friends will be provided!

Looking for help? You will see several University of Michigan students, staff, and faculty wearing these t-shirts during Welcome to Michigan . They are here to help! Ask them directions, questions about an event, or just introduce yourself and make a new friend!
